Canvas is the final arbiter. The dates below are posted for planning, but the authoritative due date and time for every deliverable is the one on its Canvas assignment. Where this page and Canvas disagree, Canvas wins. Topics marked TBD are still being finalized and will be filled in here as the semester progresses.

Project checkpoints
There are eight checkpoints, each with one primary focus. Each is worth 40 points and the best five count toward your grade — the three lowest are dropped automatically, so a bad week is already covered. Late work is not accepted; a missed checkpoint simply becomes one of your drops.
| # | Primary focus | Due | How you submit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Related work | Wednesday, September 23 | Online submission only |
| 2 | Methodology and study design | Wednesday, October 7 | Online + in-person/Teams |
| 3 | Prototype video | Sunday, October 11 | Online submission |
| 4 | In-person discussion with the co-instructor | TBD | In person |
| 5 | Core interaction complete | TBA | Online + in-person/Teams |
| 6 | Results and analysis | TBA | Online + in-person/Teams |
| 7 | Near-final paper | TBA | Online + in-person/Teams |
| 8 | Final opportunity | TBA | Online submission only |
Each checkpoint has a primary focus, but the earlier items stay live — keep addressing them as the project needs it. You are also welcome to work ahead on later steps, and doing so is eligible for extra credit.
Every checkpoint asks for the same artifacts: a 3–5 minute status video, a 3–5 minute code/prototype video once code exists, all work pushed to GitHub with a README linking the videos and your Overleaf project, and a PDF of the paper as it currently stands.
Related work. For Checkpoint 1, expect at least 10 publications in total for the group, whatever its size. By the end of the project you are expected to have at least 15 publications per group member.
LaTeX is required from Checkpoint 1 onward, using the template provided on this site or another authorized template.
Online submissions usually require a text file, a PDF, and a video.
In-person/Teams interviews mean booking a time with the professor, the TA, or Zahra Borhani. These may fall outside class hours, and must happen within the week of that submission — if you submit Checkpoint 2 on October 7, you talk to someone that same week.
Presentations
There are three graded presentations and the lowest score is dropped. For each one the material is due Monday night; you present later that week. Online students present by video upload.
| Presentation | Material due | Presented in class |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-Point Presentation / Demo Day | Monday, November 2 | Tue, November 3 & Thu, November 5 |
| Final Project Presentation — 10 minutes max per project (7 min talk + 3 min Q&A). All projects are due Monday, November 30, before the first presentation day. | Monday, November 30 | Dec 1, 3, 8 & 10 |
| Individual Research Presentation — a paper you picked for your research project, not your own paper | Monday, November 9 | Tue, November 10, Thu, November 12, Tue, November 17 & Thu, November 19 |
The Proposal Presentations were held in class earlier in the semester, with a video upload.
Notes
- Checkpoints. There are eight checkpoints across the semester, with two weeks off, and per the syllabus the best five count toward your grade. See Project checkpoints above for the focus, date and submission mode of each one.
- Presentations. See Presentations above for dates. The lowest of the three scores is dropped, and online students present by video upload.
- IRB submission is required where your project involves human participants; the deadline is TBA and depends on your project.
This class meets Tuesday, August 25 through Thursday, December 10, 2026. The last day of classes at CSU is Friday, December 11, and the term itself ends Friday, December 18, at the close of Finals Week. There is no class during Fall Break (November 23–27). The only meeting during Finals Week is the final exam. Dates are subject to change, and any change will be announced in class and on Teams.
