Texts and readings across our three threads
We won't use a single textbook. Readings (PDFs and papers) are posted on Canvas. The books below anchor the major areas; the free options carry no cost.
3D User Interfaces & VR/AR
- LaValle, S. M. Virtual Reality. Cambridge University Press, 2023. Free at lavalle.pl/vr. Spine for the perception, optics, and tracking material.
- LaViola, Kruijff, McMahan, Bowman & Poupyrev. 3D User Interfaces: Theory and Practice (2nd ed.), Addison-Wesley. The reference for interaction-technique theory (selection, manipulation, travel, system control).
- Burdea & Coiffet. Virtual Reality Technology — supplementary, for hardware variety and a course-oriented lab structure.
- Jerald, J. The VR Book: Human-Centered Design for Virtual Reality — design and perception perspective.
- Azuma, R. T. (1997). A Survey of Augmented Reality. Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, 6(4), 355–385. The classic definition of AR (combines real and virtual, interactive in real time, registered in 3D).
Human-Centered AI
- Shneiderman, B. Human-Centered AI. Oxford University Press, 2022. Framework for reliable, safe, and trustworthy AI that keeps people in control.
- Selected papers on mixed-initiative interaction, human-in-the-loop systems, interpretability, and trust — posted on Canvas. reading list TBD
Spatial AI
- Foundational and survey readings on SLAM, tracking, scene understanding, spatial computing, and embodied/agentic systems — posted on Canvas. reading list TBD
Writing & Tools
- LaTeX (required for the paper) — Overleaf, or a local TeX distribution. Use the ACM
acmartor an IEEE conference template. - Game engines / XR: Unity (examples will often be in Unity); OpenXR; Meta Quest 3 tooling. You may use another engine, but support is best-effort.
- Study strategy: Rhodes, Cleary & Bjork, A Guide to Effective Studying and Learning, Oxford University Press.
CSU & Course Links
- Canvas — readings, deliverables, announcements (backup to Teams).
